Celebrating International Day of Dhrupad today, 14 March 2019, on the occasion of Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar's birth anniversary, several Dhrupad performers and students of Dhrupad Sansthan Bhopal Nyas performed live through Facebook. Rudra Veena: a living legacy

"Rudra Veena is an instrument of measure. A compass. It gives pramaan (validation) to the musical elements. That’s what the Veena does. In a way, it is used to study music itself. For a musician, it is a valuable instrument to study sound and how the voice can be enhanced and applied, to study the structure of the Raga, to study the swar bhed (minute and microtonal detailing and exploration of individual notes)."

Sajan Sankaran speaks to Ustad Mohi Baha’uddin Dagar, scion of the Dagar family, descendant of the legendary Ustad Zakriuddin Khan, and son of the late Rudra Veena maestro Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. A torchbearer of the Sadharani Dhrupad tradition, he is an exceptional performer and inspiring Guru.

Vocal and instrumental dhrupad:
Perspectives on a linked ancestry

Vidushi Nancy Lesh came to India as a highly accomplished cellist in the Western classical music tradition in 1982, and after a chance discovery of Dhrupad, devoted her entire life to the study and practice of this age-old musical form. The first and foremost exponent of Dhrupad on the cello, she is a wonderful performer and actively travels for concerts and workshops. Nancy is based in Pune, India.
