We got invited by James Halliday AM (from now on known as 'God') to submit our wines for rating and possible inclusion into the Halliday Wine Companion 2018 (otherwise known as 'The Bible' and an excellent wine reference book). The Bible is 776 pages of information about 9769 wines that were tasted for the 2018 edition. The wines are given ratings (if warranted) and collectively the ratings determine the "winery" rating. Our first ever entry into the book and we are delighted. Will normally have one wine at 95 points or above, and two (or more) at 90 or above, others 87-89, 239 wineries, 8.3%". Halliday Wine Companion 2018 Whimwood Estate 2016 Chardonnay - Not Yet Released 95 points "Pressed straight to oak (30% new) and wild-yeast fermented. This is good stuff: the wine has considerable power, the impact of the pink grapefruit flavour immediate, and not backing off as the wine reaches the end of the palate." Whimwood Estate 2015 Chardonnay 94 points "Considerable success in '16, ranging from the trophy for Best White at the Blackwood Valley and WA Boutique wine shows. It has considerable finesse, with light-fingered choice of oak to support the fresh grapefruit and Granny Smith apple flavours of the fruit..." Whimwood Estate 2015 Shiraz 92 points "Hand-picked, fermented and matured in new and used French oak. It's light, bright crimson-purple colour tells of a fragrant, light to medium-bodied cool-grown shiraz, with fine tannins in balance. As far as it goes, delicious..." Whimwood Estate 2016 Shiraz - Not Yet Released 91 points "Hand-picked from a single estate vineyard, wild-fermented, 21 days on skins. Elegant and harmonious, with red cherry in the driver's seat, fine tannins and subtle French oak the passengers. Should be ready to pull out from the kerb at a moment's notice..."
