Things I found, things I am saving for winter

Cory's Pinecone Mound

Hi Fam! Here are some valuable things I found this week:

I Talk Like A River

I Talk Like A River is about the experience of having a speech impediment and learning to accept it. It is easy to also read the book as a story about social anxiety because the experience seems rather similar, at least in the way it is presented. The illustrations are beautiful and intelligent. I Talk Like A River will be a permanent part of my collection.

Kindness Tales: World Folktales To Talk About

I recently painted art for the cover of this compilation of folktales about kindness. I have had the fortune of reading it in advance and so I can attest that the stories are unique and well-told, written with the oral tradition in mind. They are great for storytime with children. The book is currently on pre-order until April 7th.

  • I took notice of Stephanie Fizer Coleman this week because she is diversifying her income and sharing interesting content on multiple social media platforms. She is an example of an illustrator who is doing quite well on Pinterest.
  • I will not abandon Instagram, but I am not going to make it part of my focus going forward. I have mentioned earlier that I do not think Instagram is a good partner for writers or illustrators. Instead, I will be focusing my attention on Pinterest.
  • A part of my strategy is to use a Pinterest scheduler, which can also be used as an Instagram scheduler, called Tailwind. You can use this link to get a free month and try it out. Tailwind is in a partnership with Pinterest so there is no worry of the social media app throttling your performance for using the software. It also takes a lot of thinking out of Pinterest, which is what I need, because I would rather be creating than catering to social media.

  • I have stopped thinking about "making money as a writer and illustrator" and started thinking about making money that allows me to work on the projects that I want to. So I started putting all of my passive income into dividend stocks.

"Don't work for money; make it work for you." -Robert Kiyosaki

  • I think that dividend stocks are the only truly passive way to make money work for you. If you are curious, feel free to ask me about my strategy. Also if you are interested in doing the same thing, I use Robinhood. Here is a link that will get you a free stock when you get started with Robinhood. I used a similar link when I started and it resulted in capital gains.
  • I wanted to break things up and share some of what I am currently studying, The Huldra.

"Maybe you are spending a lot of time, whether it is in a relationship, a job, or a career. [sic] That time could be costing you your greater potential." -Mike Vestil

I hope that this week's newsletter gives you some ideas about the changes you can make in your strategy to become a fully functioning writer, illustrator, or both. I know that you and I can discover the best places to put our time that will lead to that goal.
