‘THE PEOPLE OF BEIRUT NEED
OUR HELP NOW, THEY CAN’T
WAIT’ – BISHOP PHILIP CALLS
FOR PEOPLE TO GIVE TO
LEBANON CHURCH FUND
By Richard Best
The Bishop of Truro, the Rt Revd Philip Mounstephen, has urged everybody to consider giving to a fund set up to help people whose lives have been devastated by the explosion in Beirut.
The explosion in the country’s main port killed at least 154 people and is believed to have injured around 5,000 others. It is estimated that around 300,000 people have lost their homes as a result of the blast.
Beirut is the country’s capital, and the port is also the main way that food is imported into Lebanon.
A fund has been set up by the Church Mission Society (CMS), of which Bishop Philip was previously the executive leader, to channel aid via a church close to the blast site.

Thank you for your financial gifts to the mission and ministry of the All Saints family. We really appreciate all the regular support we receive through PGS and standing orders, as well as the one off donations received over this time. It has been a great blessing.
As you all know, the church has been unable to generate any income during the Coronavirus outbreak. Our outgoings have remained the same however. At the beginning of this year, we had £34,220 in our account, which is equivalent to 6 month's costs. The current projection for the end of this year is that we will be left with enough money to pay just under two month's costs, £7,345. We urgently need to generate further funds in order to pay for these costs.

Find simple ways to help deal with loneliness and isolation.
- Pray. Light a candle, if safe, and pray for hope, faith and strength to keep loving and caring for each other during this time of struggle.
-
Talk about how you feel. This may be difficult if you are self-isolating, but do use the telephone, internet, and social media. If you need to contact a counsellor this can be arranged by your GP, or via local agencies, or privately. The Samaritans are there 24 hours a day, every day, and it’s free to call them on 116 123.
- Focus on the things that you can change, not on the things you can’t.
-
Look after yourself - physically, emotionally, spiritually. Plan in things that you enjoy at regular intervals during the day – a TV programme, a phone call, a book, a favourite dish, a game.
-
Look after others. Even if only in small ways, but do what you can: a smile, a kind word, writing a letter or an email.

SIMON CADE IS
APPOINTED AS NEW
DIOCESAN
SECRETARY
| |
Simon Cade has been appointed to the role of diocesan secretary, within the Diocese of Truro.
Simon has carried out the role on an interim basis since January, and his appointment was made following an internal recruitment process and interview.
Bishop Philip said he is delighted by Simon’s appointment. He said: “I know that those who have worked with Simon over recent months will warmly welcome this news.
‘UNIQUE COMBINATION OF GIFTS’
“Personally I am delighted and thank God for sending us someone with such a unique combination of gifts and such an evident desire to serve both the Kingdom and Cornwall to the best of his considerable abilities.
“Do join with me in thanking God for this and – as I’m sure you will – please give Simon your full support. We face challenging and uncertain times ahead: but we trust in the faithfulness and the goodness of our God to lead us on together.”
Simon was diocesan director of education & discipleship prior to his move into the interim diocesan secretary role. He had held that post since 2014.
ORDAINED
Before that, Simon was in parish ministry and was latterly the Team Rector of Redruth.
Simon is originally from Portland in Dorset, he is married to Catherine and was ordained in 1994.
He said: “ I am honoured and somewhat daunted by the trust put in me, but I know that I have an outstanding team around me. I am confident that, building on the firm foundations of Esther Pollard’s work, we will be ready to respond to God’s call for the Church of England in Cornwall. Thank you to all those who in this most challenging of years have given so much to sustain and grow our work, I look forward to the next steps in this adventure.”

Social distancing:
what you need to do
| |
To stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), you should try to avoid close contact with anyone you do not live with. This is called social distancing.
How to avoid spreading the infection
It's very important to do what you can to reduce the risk of you and other people getting ill with coronavirus.
You can spread the virus even if you do not have symptoms.
Face coverings
Wear something that covers your nose and mouth:
- on public transport
- when you go to hospital appointments or visit someone in hospital
If you can, also wear a face covering in other places when it's hard to stay away from people, such as in shops.
Face coverings should not be worn by children under 3 and people who would find wearing them difficult (such as people with breathing difficulties).
To find out who needs to wear a face covering on public transport, see safer travel guidance for passengers on GOV.UK. | |
