Your foundation dollars at work:
livescribe pens
For some Portola Valley School District students with special needs, Livescribe Pens that record lectures and digitize handwritten notes provide crucial support for their learning. Teachers and paraprofessionals use the pens while teaching live, transmit their notations to an iPad or a Google Drive, and then kids with IEPs and 504s view them in real-time or review them later for details.
Special Education Teacher Crissy Untrecht reports that as an added plus, she has found that the Livescribe pens allow students to share those notes among themselves so that others – not just those with IEPs – are learning better too.
“Not only does the Livescribe Pen and iPad allow my team convenient note-taking capabilities to give equal access of general education curriculum to our students,” Untrecht wrote in her grant, “it also enhances our communication. As the special education teacher cannot be in all classrooms at once, one paraprofessional can take notes that others can use.”
Students will increase success in their classrooms through access to teacher notes in a discreet manner,” she added. “They want to be successful without looking different. This system enables that.”
With a grant from the Portola Valley Schools Foundation, Untrecht purchased three new Livescribe Pens, their accompanying notepads, and another iPad, to replace equipment that was wearing out and to expand capacity.
