Hello,

We hope Saturday is treating you softly. We’re popping in for a special weekend edition of the newsletter to keep you up to date . . . .

A short introduction for those wondering who just interrupted their weekend rituals, we are ½ of the band Good Information [Biboye - left, Connell - right]. Together, we manage the digital footprint of the band, organize shows, and keep all our projects moving forward. With spring officially here, you’re catching us at a good time.

As closet-sneakerheads, we also represent the band’s fondness for fashion. So we’re trading in our boots and hoodies for springtime layers and a selection of New Balances. We’re also pretty avid cyclists. With the sun shining, you’ll catch us riding around YEG causing a scene on the regular. Weekly Specials:

"can i get a bite?"

  1. Biboye: Multi-instrumentalist and illustrious producer Jai Paul just recreated his MYSPACE in honour of the 10-year anniversary of “BTSU”. The MASSIVE track was first released there before it made global waves and was eventually sampled by Drake and Beyonce. Paul is particularly inspirational for us in the enigmatic way he navigates the music industry.

  2. B: RECKONINGS ALONG HIS JOURNEY TO STARDOM: MUSICIAN OLU OF EARTHGANG” share’s wisdom and bares his body and soul.
  3. B: The Alchemist continues to display his versatility on “NOBLES”, featuring Earl Sweatshirt and Navy Blue. Direction credits to RYOSUKE TANZAWA, who is taking over that scene. His EP is following up on an impeccable streak of work with: Freddie Gibbs, Boldly James, Conway the machine, Armand Hammer and others.
  4. B: After a year with more time spent at home than ever before, I’m looking forward to spending as much time outside as possible. Usually I leave the phone at home and take a break from tech, but lately these SOUNDPEATS WIRELESS EARPHONES have helped make music my companion on runs and bike rides.

SPEAKERS AND THE LOVE BELOW WITH DEVON TURNBUL
ssense

Connell: As the creator of fashion brand/hifi imprint OJAS, Devin Turnbull talks about audio in a way that brings me joy. Hi-Fidelity audio systems have a cult following that rivals streetwear so it makes complete sense for Turnbull to have a hand in both worlds.

PAUL SCHRADER ON MAKING AND WATCHING MOVIES IN THE AGE OF NETFLIX
the new yorker

B: The writer behind Taxi Driver, The Yakuza, and, my favourite movie, 2017’s First Reformed, shares his observations on film in the modern age. As a proponent of the “Transcendental Style in Film”, our COVID-cravings for binge-able series’ raise concerns for him and the world of feature films.

C: Forget big fashion houses that set future targets for sustainable practices, JIYONGKIM IS MAKING SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED GARMENTS RIGHT NOW

South Korea’s Jiyong Kim pulls vintage, recycled and repurposed fabrics from their surroundings for their SS21 collection. The catch? Each piece is left on a mannequin in nature for an extended time to be weathered and bleached by the elements. No ammonia or laser jean distressing machine needed here, these garments feel like home.

GARETH GILLILAND - PEOPLE WATCHING TV
gareth gilliland

B: Gareth has dialed in his guitar tones and soft vocal harmony with his first solo release. Serenading us in 7 while drums and the sound of chimes peak through the cracks. *full disclosure* I spent a semester living with Gareth, so I’ve got a soft spot for his handiwork. But this tune has me welcoming new sounds with open arms as they slide ;) in-between tradition and innovation.

DANIEL ETOROMA - GOOD THING

B: This video is on fire. You’ve got a good thing going Daniel.

KIEFER - BETWEEN DAYS
stones throw records

B: Kiefer is just showing off at this point. No one thought Ahmad Jamal’s relaxed feel on the keys would ever make a comeback - then Kiefer arrived. And has done it time and time again. Head-nod central with this new album.

ALFA MIST - BRING BACKS
youtube

B: As one of the few artists we can draw a direct comparison to, we were on this the second it dropped. The playing is spectacular, but this release really shows his maturity as a composer. He handles the bigger ensemble so beautifully. (It’s also extra inspiring as we just finished arranging a large suite of music for ourselves + the Vertex (string) Quartet.

BUTCHER BROWN - TINY DESK (HOME) CONCERT
youtube

B: This all-star crew from Richmond, Virginia moves through funk, jazz, hiphop and more. Inspirational moments all over this performance, but Tennishu stands out as he swaps between trumpet, sax, and spitting bars from song to song.

MIKE - EVIL EYE
youtube

B: Leader of New York’s new rap vanguard, MIKE pays homage to the g.o.a.t. MF DOOM with the video for his latest single. (Credits to TANZAWA once again) The late great has played with this slip-screen effect on videos for both ‘Dead Bent’ and GUV’NOR. Here, MIKE drops his usual somber masks and dons a grin so big, we can’t help but smile back. (also, peep the Stone Island)

HIATUS KAIYOTE - RED ROOM

C: VIBES. No further questions.

SNEAK PREVIEW

“Fringes” - Artwork by Hannah Labonte, Design by Jamie Tameta

We’re pleased to announce that our debut single will be released on May 7th. You can pre-save it on Spotify HERE for a chance to win one of 2 Good Info x ICYT long-sleeves.

We’ve been playing this song for almost 3 years now, and we’re not sure why, but it’s become a crowd favourite. If you’ve ever run into an Instagram story of our band, we’re probably playing this song. For some reason once the opening “crack” of the snare hits, everybody’s phone comes out. More on the origins of the tune below . . .
