In 2024, volunteers at our 6 locations gave 44,100 hours to help 19,200 families (62,400 individuals) with groceries and personal care items, and 7,000 families (20,900 individuals) with clothing. Many of these families received holiday food/gifts, back to school supplies and household items. Not including food picked up at other stores, per the Akron Canton Food Bank 2024 report, food that our volunteers picked up from the food bank: Goodyear Heights Food Center - 713,760 pounds of food and 226,853 pounds of produce / Cuyahoga Falls - 419,136 pounds of food and 111,856 pounds of produce / Green - 68,661 pounds of food, 14,347 pounds of produce and 16,382 pounds of food for senior boxes. On Friday, March 28th, we held a "retirement" and birthday luncheon for George Camilletti at our food center. We appreciate his service and dedication to Good Neighbors and our community. He served as our Trustee Chairman, Ways & Means Chairman and Food Center Manager. Sharon Connor , Ward 10 Councilwoman, presented George with a Proclamation from the Akron City Council . Thank you to everyone who attended, and to Kathy Frye, Wilma McMasters, Beth Burch and Debi Foss for planning the event. Unit Activities The Community Outreach and Food Center Of Good Neighbors The Good Neighbors Food Center's entrance and parking lot are located at 1460 Bingham Path, Akron, 44305 From January through March, our food center volunteers gave 3,981 hours to serve 2,823 families (9,694 individuals) during the 132 hours that we were open. IBH Volunteers continue to help our volunteers unload the trucks when we pick up large orders from the food bank. Kathy Frye manages our food center. Bill Wise maintains our food center, office and annex buildings. Charlene Nevada Krummel writes the grants and serves as the Ways & Means Chair for the Good Neighbors Central Office and Food Center. The following schools recently held food drives for our food center: Helen Arnold, Jennings and Findley. Valerie Straw coordinates the food drives and our volunteers pick up the donations. During weekends in February and March, Kathy Frye and Wilma McMasters cleaned and organized our food center. Brenda Cox, Beth Stalnaker Burch, John & Julie Bates, Flo Iacobucci and Georgetta Geasley helped over 2 weekends with deep cleaning. George Camilletti and Bill Wise worked on maintenance and improvement projects. The Thursday volunteers worked late to move everything so the floor could be scrubbed and waxed. On Sunday, volunteers helped to put everything back. The funds for the floor to be professionally cleaned and waxed were provided by Beth & Brad Burch . Our sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Violet Christy , she volunteered for 32 years with our organization . Richard McMasters recently celebrated his 93rd birthday. Happy Anniversary to our Tuesday volunteers Mark & Valerie Hawks . Valerie's mom Ruth Lowe helped open our first food center. Tom Fischbach , grandson of Good Neighbors Founder Laura McClure, and his friend stopped by our food center. His friend made a financial donation in honor of Laura's daughter Shirley Fischbach . We are grateful to Beth & Brad Burch for their generosity. They volunteer and continue to financially support our food center. Bill Sudduth received a commendation from the Akron Police Department and Akron Fire Department for going the extra mile to try to save his neighbor . Bill is always so kind and caring, and an outstanding food center volunteer. He picks up food from the food bank, many other stores and food drive donations, unloads and organizes the food in both of our buildings several days a week. The Cuyahoga Falls Unit of Good Neighbors The Cuyahoga Falls Good Neighbors is located at 1742 2nd Street, Cuyahoga Falls, 44221 Cuyahoga Falls Good Neighbors Unit Update from January through March, 2025. Volunteers: Our Volunteers continue to amaze us! Forty-five volunteers provided 3,624 hours of service during January through March. Community Involvement and Donations: Cascade Subaru Loves to Help - we distributed over 120 fuzzy and warm children’s winter coats donated to us by Cascade Subaru. They were especially needed during these cold winter months. Stow High School Student Council - held a Clothing Drive for us in late March. They helped to sort. What a great and generous group of students! Portage Community Bank - continues to provide us with two volunteers every Thursday! They are hard and conscientious workers and we really appreciate them. St. Eugene's Catholic Church & The Knights of Columbus - provided us with an abundance of toiletry packs (180) for our homeless population. Moose Lodge 918 - continues to donate a large % of their monthly bingo receipts! BINGO! HiHo Brewing Co & Restaurant - continues to support us. This month they are holding a "Spring Cleaning Drive". The Ellet Unit of Good Neighbors The Ellet Good Neighbors is located on the first floor of North Springfield Presbyterian Church, 2630 Albrecht Avenue, Akron, 44312 Chris Krinjeck Bolyard manages the Ellet Unit and reported that groceries and gift cards are always needed to help serve their clients. Thank you to our volunteers and donors for their continued support. Open for donations and client visits on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of every month from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Helping the community since 1968. The Green Unit of Good Neighbors The Green Good Neighbors is located in the back of Greensburg United Methodist Church, 2161 Greensburg Road, Green, 44232 Patricia Stiles manages the Green Unit and Nancy Hall serves as their treasurer. From January through March, their volunteers gave 1,709 hours to help 296 families (844 individuals) with groceries and 149 families (462 individuals) with clothing. They have great community support and wonderful volunteers. Drive through food distribution remains in effect. Open on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Open the first 4 Wednesdays of the month and closed on the 5th Wednesday. Helping the community since 1968. The Superior-Wooster Clothing Unit of Good Neighbors The Superior-Wooster Good Neighbors is located in Centenary United Methodist Church, 1310 Superior Avenue, Akron, 44307 Wilma McMasters and Lee Thomas manage the Superior-Wooster Clothing Unit and reported that they are always in need of new underclothing, baby diapers and personal care items for their clients. They are grateful to Green Good Neighbors for assisting with clothing donations. Sending our sympathy and condolences to Lee Thomas and family, her sister recently passed away. Continued prayers for Lee and her health concerns. Open on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. until noon. The Tallmadge Unit of Good Neighbors The Tallmadge Good Neighbors is located at 74 Community Drive, Tallmadge, 44278 Candy Lorkowski manages the Tallmadge Unit and reported that they would like to thank all those who contributed to our Easter give out. The Easter baskets were filled with lots of goodies! Each family will receive a gift card besides the extra food purchased. Wishing all a blessed Easter and a lovely Spring.
