ISLAND TEENS ADVOCACY TEAM ITAT NEWSLETTER November + December 2021 ITAT Students & the Season of Giving This Holiday season, our ITAT students are giving back to their communities.Island Teens Advocacy team continued their anti-vaping/tobacco signage project by placing signs on all of the buses in Alpine School District. In an article written about the ITAT and OUTRAGE (UCHD youth group) signage project on the Daily Herald, Westlake ITAT president Siona Savao stated “I hope that more people will feel comfortable being able to go on buses, and be more knowledgeable about vaping and how it’s targeting teens." Vaping on high school buses is a huge problem at schools in Utah, and ITAT is making a difference by spreading education about vaping and its harmful effects on the mind and body. ITAT students also participated in Westlake High Schools Christmas Jar event. They sold hot chocolate to the faculty, students, and community members who attended. The event was held outdoors due to COVID, and it was a cold winter night but ITAT was happy to participate and their Christmas jar overflowed with tickets. ITAT enjoyed working with the other clubs in their school to promote the Christmas spirit of giving, as the proceeds from each clubs' booth will be donated to a family in need this Christmas. "Love isnt love until you give it away". Our ITAT students are remarkable in giving their love to others. 🖤 ITAT stops to pose and show their signage ITAT students placing signage on Alpine School District buses ITAT and OUTRAGE students placing signage on Alpine School District buses ITAT students spreading Christmas cheer at the Christmas Jar event Great American Smokeout Every year on November 18th, ITAT celebrates a national anti-tobacco day called Great American Smokeout (GASO). This year for GASO, ITAT students participated in mental health exercises and discussed healthy alternatives teens can do instead of vaping. More than four out of five young adults ages 18 to 24 who have ever used tobacco reported that their first product was flavored. a 2020 study of a ban on all flavored tobacco in San Francisco found that in young adults 18-24, flavored tobacco product use dropped from 81% to 69% and flavored e-cigarette use rates decreased from 57% to 45%.
