Who would have guessed at the beginning of 2020 that everything would be shut down for months and we wouldn’t be able to gather with like-minded Republicans for months?

I look forward to seeing many of your smiling faces on Tuesday, September 15th for our first Star Republican Women meeting since February!

You are all well aware of the most important election of our lifetimes this November 3rd.  Of course, everyone knows how critical it is to get President Trump reelected, but not everyone realizes just how critical the Texas House and Senate elections are in the grand scheme of things.

As you know, the hot topic of the Legislative Session of 2021 in Texas will be redistricting.  What you may not know is how few seats in the House it would take for the Democrats to gain control, thereby making them in control of the redistricting.  If that happens, the district lines will be redrawn to the ensure that Democrats are the majority in each House District, causing Texas to be lost.  And if we lose Texas, we lose America as we know it.

Currently, there are very few House seats held by Democrats in which we have much of a chance for the Republican candidate to unseat the incumbent.  There is, however, one very close to us and that is House District 52 which is a small chunk of Williamson County in the southeastern corner.  The Republican challenger is Lucio Valdez and we can help him beat the (D) incumbent!  We will also be walking for U.S. Congressman John (“Judge”) Carter who is at risk of losing to a (D) in Williamson County.

Please join us on Friday, Sept. 18th to block walk and knock on doors of targeted houses where there are swing voters or known Republicans who haven’t voted in recent elections.  There’s a place for you, even if you’re not able to walk the blocks or don’t feel comfortable approaching homes.  We need someone who can drive from one end of the block to the other for those walking on each side of the street.

We will meet at Beall’s (store now closed) parking lot in Marble Falls at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 18th and meet up with others at a predetermined area in HD 52.  We will return by 2 or 2:30 that afternoon after we have lunch together to share stories.  It will be fun and hope you’ll join us.

Check the flyer in this newsletter as you may want to join us on other dates as well.

Hope to see you September 15th!

Denise Rives, SRW President

SRW Red Shoe Book Club

Picks "Giver of Stars"

Picture

Star Republican Women has announced its latest Red Shoe Book Club selection:  "The Giver of Stars" by Jojo Moyes.

SRW Literacy Committee Chairman Kathy Hussey is working on the exact time and place for the Red Shoe Book Club to meet and expects to announce that information at the September 15 meeting.

In the meantime, we encourage you to obtain your book and get a head start in reading this highly rated book.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Set in Depression-era America, a breathtaking story of five extraordinary women and their remarkable journey through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond, from the author of Me Before You

Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically.

The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky.

What happens to them--and to the men they love--becomes an unforgettable drama of loyalty, justice, humanity and passion. These heroic women refuse to be cowed by men or by convention. And though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful, at others brutal, they’re committed to their job: bringing books to people who have never had any, arming them with facts that will change their lives.

Based on a true story rooted in America’s past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope and epic in its storytelling. Funny, heartbreaking, enthralling, it is destined to become a modern classic--a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond.

Even if you haven't read the book, you can attend and enjoy the conversation about the book and other topics of interest to the group.
