ITAT Celebrates the Joy of Giving

This month, our students participated in a service project for the unhoused community of Salt Lake City. Over 35 ITAT students participated, taking the Trax downtown to distribute gift bags to our unhoused friends. These gift bags contained hand warmers, warm socks and beanies, sanitary wipes, and flyers about the spirit of Christmas as well as vaping resources. The students also facilitated a coat drive during December and distributed the coats and clothing they collected during the activity. The students shared their experience participating in the service project:

-"I don't know how I made them feel. I don't know how I might have blessed their lives. And I don't know what they're going through. They might think nothing of it. They might think a lot of it. But I do know how it made me feel and how it can bless my life. If I strive to help others, I find that sharing this light not only fuels mine, but also brightens others. I am grateful for this opportunity and that I can find joy in sharing the Light of Christ" -Ty Krinke

-"During my ITAT experience today we were able to hand out presents and clothing to the homeless during the holiday season. While we were handing things out we met this woman who was very grateful for us. She broke down in tears and thanked us. I loved how we were able to help and make this and many more peoples day. As we walked away most of us were in tears too. It was an amazing opportunity for us to make an impact and help others through life." -Preston Ashton

-Today I had the opportunity to help out with ITAT. We went up to Salt Lake City to help the people in need and at first I didn't really think anything of it but after a while I started to notice that we were actually making a difference in the community. The things we were doing were just giving out gift bags and some clothes. [It was] really not much but I could tell it had a impact in the community. The people were very happy and grateful to see us and some even started crying. This really touched my heart and it made me remember the real Christmas meaning to give and love. Christmas is not about what you get its about what you can give." - Rockwell Smith

-It was a really good experience. It was cool to see how happy the people we helped would get even with just a small bag of supplies. It makes it easy to see how easy you can impact someones day"

-"I felt that good warm feeling inside like when you go to the temple for the first time. I think I had this feeling because I knew that I was helping one of Gods children and that it made their day better"

                    ITAT Adovcacy Activities

Along with our ITAT service project, our island teens also shared refusal tips and tricks with their peers, to combat the issue of vapes being sold and offered at school. Our ITAT students showed others how to practice refusing and educating others when offered vapes or tobacco products. They educated their peers on the dangerous impact of smoking on the body and mind. Advisor Auro Sosi on the activity:

"We split up the entire class into smaller groups so that they could randomly choose 1 Peer Pressure Scenario Card and 1 Refusal Skill Card. They were to study the scenario and act it out while utilizing the Refusal Skill they randomly selected. This activity was our favorite, not only because of the different scenarios that were acted out, but the discussions that followed. Some of our students had unfortunate real life experiences with these scenarios and were able to share their feelings and how they were able to refuse and some openly admitted that they wish they would have learned about these refusal skills sooner so they would have known what to do."

ITAT students also provided tobacco and vape education to students from Joel P Jensen Middle School in West Jordan. They had a lunch booth where they shared the harms of vaping and tobacco use, and taught the middle schoolers about how they can continue to be vape and smoke free.
