Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ

stewardship and giving - GOOD NEWS STORIES

On Monday Revd Jeremy received news that the Laing Family Trusts are gifting the church £30,000 to go toward the Lifehouse Project. This is in addition to an anonymous donation of £50,000 the week before and following a £50,000 donation 5 weeks ago from the Allchurches Trust.

On Thursday evening someone contacted Revd Jeremy at the vicarage all the way from Lowerstoft after seeing the work the church is doing through facebook, specifically through the Acts 435 programme. Laura who phoned wished to donate something to say thank you. £150 was given to the church for the work of Acts 435.

On Thursday Avril had put out a request for a singly mattress to be donated for a family who have a son who lives with ADHD. Within 12mins of putting the request online it was met.

On Saturday (last week) Revd Jeremy took a phone call from a couple who saw our request for prayer to help with our financial challenges during lockdown. By the end of the phone call the couple had committed £5000 to help the church.

Supporting Good mental health

Find simple ways to help deal with loneliness and isolation.

  1. Pray. Light a candle, if safe, and pray for hope, faith and strength to keep loving and caring for each other during this time of struggle.
  2. Talk about how you feel. This may be difficult if you are self-isolating, but do use the telephone, internet, and social media. If you need to contact a counsellor this can be arranged by your GP, or via local agencies, or privately. The Samaritans are there 24 hours a day, every day, and it’s free to call them on 116 123.
  3. Focus on the things that you can change, not on the things you can’t.
  4. Look after yourself - physically, emotionally, spiritually. Plan in things that you enjoy at regular intervals during the day – a TV programme, a phone call, a book, a favourite dish, a game.
  5. Look after others. Even if only in small ways, but do what you can: a smile, a kind word, writing a letter or an email.

The Church of England have produced a series of reflections on how to cope with anxiety and loneliness in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, including simple Christian meditation techniques. The third is a reflection on where God is in the struggles.

Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’

Luke 10:38-42

Life sometimes feels like one long to-do list. It always seems like someone else manages it better than we do. There is nothing new in frenetic activity, and the longing for space, for time to think and just catch our breath, particularly at this difficult time.  Read more

FROM SHORE TO SHIP REACHING OUT TO COMMUNITIES AT SEA
Picture
Picture

It’s so hard to be distanced from each other during this Covid-19 crisis, but what if you are anchored on a ship, thousands of miles from home, with no idea when things will change. Those were the thoughts of Dan Perkins when looking at the large ships, static and dotted out to sea in Gerrans Bay. Dan, who worships at St Gerrans, is a volunteer coastguard with the Portscatho Coastguard Rescue team.

Dan spoke with Revd Jill Edwards, and churchwarden Anne Wesley, and together thought how great it would be if they were able to reach out from shore to ship to let them know they were not alone. They wanted the crews to know that they were thinking of them and to invite them to join them with their online services.

They took their idea to local manager, Tom Ebbens, a Senior Coastguard Operations Officer, who is also chaplain to the Coastguard Services and a second year ordinand with SWMTC. Tom agreed and in turn spoke to the Falmouth Coastguards operations centre. Read more.

Meditations for Isolation

Picture

Can you recall how much trouble Jesus got for eating with sinners, tax collectors and outcasts. Can you recall the time when his disciples couldn’t believe that everyone could be fed, when 5000 families gathered hungry for food? The gospel that Jesus teaches is a gospel of radical hospitality. And this encounter with the resurrected Christ is part this teaching. Through his action of breaking bread with strangers and friends, highlighting the basic human need to eat, he is saying ‘do you recognise me now?” And will you recognise me again? (Revd Jeremy Putnam)

Last week's meditation, which was part of our Sunday morning worship was written and recorded by Anna Robinson. (All Saints TM Worship Leader).

STAYING WELL NHS.UK

Everyone must stay at home to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

You should only leave the house for 1 of 4 reasons:

  • shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
  • one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
  • any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
  • travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home
