Logging On Season 2 Premiere -

Ian: After a long hiatus, we are bringing Logging On back from the dead! It’ll be a bit different than what it used to be, but change is nice and warranted to keep this newsletter as creative as possible. Yes, you should still expect link dumps and music from indie-sleaze adjacent artists.

You’ll notice that this won’t solely be a solo endeavour moving forward. Adding Rae into this allows you all a peek into our smooth brained communications and I want to keep this shit fun for as long as I can.

Weekly Specials:

I: And by fun, we mean partaking in the absolute lowest form of content in the new year. In and Out lists. I wanted to re-word this list to match what Street Night Live went with (Things I Want To See More Of vs. Things I Want To See Less Of), but nah. Being a hater is fine. Embrace it.

RAE:

R: This list is presented with no comment, and no - I will not further elaborate.

I: I've got no issues with workwear, but double knee pants have seen an end to their top spot of desirable pants.

I: It’s a shame to see mohair cardigans hit the proverbial ceiling, but there’s a ton of other knitwear styles that deserve some shine. Like these cashmere polos from Tricot, waffle knits from Outerknown, this cropped v-neck ribbed sweater from Lady White Co. There’s a whole world of beautiful, sumptuous knits, so you don’t have to be the guy alone in the corner wearing a Needles mohair cardigan.

IAN:

I: Despite what Rae said, I will elaborate on some points in my list.

IN

OUT

R: Double Knees - Yes, I take personal offense to this.

R: On Gen Z Fashion TikTok, I’ve always thought that the discourse around it has always felt very “old man yells at cloud” / hating on it for the sake of being from a younger generation. Is it basically Y2K culture re-packaged for today? Mostly. Is it a little dumb? Probably. Will we look back on it in a similar fondness as Mid 2000’s Tumblr Swag Era photos? I really hope so.

I: Funny enough it’s not so much me being upset about the younger crowd. It’s growing up in that era and seeing the exact same clothes from that period gives me flashbacks of the ugly garm battefields. But this is how personal taste blossoms, so I’m just validating myself of being a hater.

THIS JUST IN: PERSONAL STYLE IS DEAD AND THE ALGORITHM KILLED IT. Damn you TikTok. Damn you to hell.

R: Gnomecore IG Account

Picture

R: As we end the era of the core-ification of every single microtrend, one winner remains: Gnomecore. Long live the gnome.

I: I’ve gotta backpack on this one and agree. This is the best core microtrend that’s ever existed because this is what I identify with.

R: Bricks & Wood FW22 - B2 Blazer + Pangea Pant

“Made it out the jungle now I’m up in Japan”

R: Haven, Hearth Blanket + Pallium Robe

Picture

R: Made of luxurious Loro Piana Capolavoro double-faced virgin wool, I’d get this and immediately spill my uber eats order on it.

I: Knickerbocker x Fracap Hiker Shoe

Picture

I: I absolutely love this collaboration and I think this particular silhouette is outstanding. Not bulky or overtly chunky, these are THE ‘hiker’ shoes I’ve been searching for.

MEDIA:

R: The Dave Bautista Method gq

For his first GQ cover story, friend of the brand Yang-Yi Goh sits down with Dave Bautista.

I: For all intents and purposes, The Rock may be the biggest box office earning wrestler turned actor, but Dave Bautisita is the best actor of the bunch. His filmography speaks for itself.

I: Big list incoming

Your stuff is actually worse now vox
How the cult of consumerism ushered in an era of badly made products.

Amoeba Music asks, ‘What’s in your bag?’ and no algorithm can compete wapo
In the long-running YouTube series, musicians divulge what they’ve bought at the legendary record store. Their answers provide an education in how to discover music.

Fontaines D.C. - What's In My Bag?

I: This was one of my favourite eps from the year. Absolute treasure trove of suggestions.

Is Live Music Broken? It’s Not Just Ticketmaster, It’s Everything. the ringer
The nightmarish experience Taylor Swift fans went through earlier this year has sparked debate over monopolies and how tickets are sold. But it’s more than just Swift’s upcoming tour—the entire concert industry is facing unprecedented challenges.

Ticketmaster’s Dark History the american prospect
40-year saga of kickbacks, threats, political maneuvering, and the humiliation of Pearl Jam

How Many Clothes Should We Own, Exactly? vogue
Researchers found a “sufficient” wardrobe consists of 74 garments and 20 outfits in total.

I: Also suggested is buying 5 new clothes a year which actually doesn’t feel all that hard to do. Considering second-hand garments are not included in this and I can continue to raid eBay for all its Made in USA Ralph Lauren at dirt bottom prices; I find it quite realistic to the point where I hereby accept this challenge. Let the count begin!

LISTEN:

R: Podcast - Nowhere Fast Podcast, A Conversation with Chef Noah Gado

For some Edmonton specific content, it’s no secret that you can find me at Rosewood Foods a few times a week. For this week’s episode, my good friend Wes interviews Chef Noah Gado, who you can usually find slanging some great food and finger guns in the kitchen at one of my most beloved spots in the city.

R: Podcast - Derrick Gee Speaks Volumes, “Genre’s Suck”

Derrick Gee has probably been my favorite TikTok account since I joined the platform. He covers Hi-Fi audio & music history with a heavy focus on cultural context, and his combination of clearly visible knowledge/passion as well as laid back personality make it great content for anyone, audiophile or not (re: me). He recently launched a longform podcast, Derrick Gee Speaks Volumes, and this week tackles why we need to move past genres.

R: Hide & Seek - Stormzy, FLO Remix

Fresh off their guest spot in Pinkpantheress’ Boiler Room set, rising R&B group FLO link up with UK rap staple Stormzy for a remix of the standout letter to his ex off his last album “This is What I Mean”.

Further listening: The Lead - FLO

FLO is full on early 2000’s girl group R&B re-worked for the TikTok generation, and frankly, I’m here for it.

I: Kevin Morby - Full Performance (Live on KEXP)

I: The Smile: Tiny Desk Concert

I: beabadoobee - Full Performance (Live on KEXP)

I: Articles of Interest, Season 3

As recommended by Blackbird Spyplane, a season long investigation into the whole American Ivy movement of which I love. Long live Oxford cloth button-downs!

And just for fun because it’s the new year and I have no new music suggestions yet, here is my completely unrequested Albums of the Year (2022).

WILDCARD

Every weekly newsletter dispatch will end with a WILDCARD feature, alternatingly picked by either Ian or Rae.

R: To start the week and in honour of GETTING ABSOLUTELY TORCHED in the gym, I’d like to leave you with this video.

I: I truly hate this so much. But thanks for reading! See you next week.
