We wish you the best possible 2021. We start the New Year with a vaccine on the horizon, and the promise of a return to brighter and more normal school days. But, as indicated in our blog this month, we'll definitely need courage to keep us going! Here are some people and books to inspire.
January Heroine
This month we're focusing on the courageous and relentless founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale. The "lady with the lamp" made the rounds at night among wounded soldiers in the Crimean War. Hers was not simply the courage to tend the wounded in filthy battlefield hospitals; she revolutionized patient care. Florence Nightingale forged a new professional path for women. Her biography and wonderful books for children can be found here.

We have moved all our inspiring books about Martin Luther King Jr. (whom our nation celebrates this month on January 18) to our Holidays Tab. You'll find excellent overviews of his life and work. Third to sixth grade teachers and students may especially delight in a recent book: Martin & Anne: The Kindred Spirits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Anne Frank by Nancy Churnin. This is an unexpected pair, but Martin Luther King Jr. and Anne Frank--born an ocean apart in the same year (1929)--confronted similar challenges. This lyrically written dual biography shows how each faced the scourge of racism and violence in their own countries with courage, kindness, well chosen words, and a love of humanity.
