What happened in the November session of the Texas State Board of Education? | |
Mexican American Studies: My office has formed a task force of educators to create a formal course to be implemented state-wide. The group is made of teachers have written their own MAS curriculum and are currently teaching the course in their respective high schools. Professors in Chicano Studies and the College of Education from the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Houston are also part of the team.
Comparative Literature: I am also writing an additional option for high school seniors. Soon, Texas students will have the option to take the traditional ENG IV course or take Comparative Literature.
Texas Social Studies: I am forming a state-wide work group of Texas teachers who currently teach any of the 13 courses in Social Studies. We will review the courses as they exist and develop supplemental readings and suggested lessons to fill the cultural gaps.

November proves, once again, that great things happen to those who work hard! I had the honor of reading the last Texas State Board of Education's invocation of 2017, be interviewed by the 6th grade class of Ascarate Elementary School in El Paso, meet the Laredo ISD district leadership team and parent liaisons, read to kindergarten Dual Language students at Mesita Early Childhood Development Center, present to the TSTA Student Program at the University of Texas at El Paso... and the month isn't over yet!
