Do you believe in the power of early childhood education? Do you think it lays a foundation for future curiosity and a love of learning? Do you think that families are integral to this foundation? Do you think it should be accessible for all? If you answered yes to any of these questions, please explore the pages of our October Newsletter to learn more about what is happening at Escuela Cooperativa de Sayulita.
We began the new school year at the end of August when we welcomed 7 new children who you see pictured here. This year we are serving 27 local families and continue to have a waiting list.
Due to COVID, our lead teacher Marthita has organized the children into small groups. The 3- and 4- year olds attend twice a week from 9:00 to 2:00 while the 5-year olds come for an additional day on Friday. Everyone wears a mask and washes their hands regularly. We look forward to the day when it is safe to remove masks and return to a full week of school for everyone.
In addition to the 7 new children, we also welcomed a new assistant teacher, Natalia (Naty). She tells us "Being a teacher is the best job when you do it from the heart. There is no greater satisfaction..." We agree!
This summer we co-sponsored a five-week English Language immersion program, Ingles Divertido, with Mujeres Movimiento at Escuela. We had a dedicated team of six teachers who worked with 26 local children aged 6-11. We are continuing this program as an after-school program starting November 2nd with the same cohort of students. The families were thrilled with the outcomes. Among those measured: The 6-8 year olds learned 870 English words; the 9-11 year olds learned 1438. These words from one family sum up the feelings of everyone involved: "Muchas gracias por este proyecto tan maravilloso."
The community has also requested ballet lessons. Escuela began these classes at the end of summer and will continue to offer this program after school also in collaboration with Mujeres Movimiento.
