November NEWSLETTER

Do you believe in the power of early childhood education? Do you think it provides a strong foundation for a community's future? Do you think that families are an integral part of their children's education? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we invite you to explore the pages of our November Newsletter to learn about what is happening at Escuela Cooperativa de Sayulita. This marks the 3rd year of our tuition-free school. Escuela provides an educational opportunity for young children in a safe environment where learning happens every day through play and cooperative activities. Parents are actively involved through the daily lunches they bring and the regular cleaning and maintenance of the school grounds and classroom.

Through our Montessori-based methods, children help each other learn life skills. With the age range of 3-5 years old, they experience how cooperation and collaboration are the keys to their success.

The children twist into new yoga positions twice a week. A new addition to their activities is a Zumba class where they dance their hearts out! They are also active with regular physical education classes.

Our master teacher Dulce and her assistant Nancy lead the class in daily math and language arts lessons. They first teach and demonstrate an activity. Then the children practice and learn from each other.

The teachers led a cooking class that brought many smiles. The children came to school with chef hats made by their parents the night before. Everyone had a turn adding to the homemade bread.

The Day of the Dead is a significant family-centered celebration across Mexico, and Sayulita is no exception. Each year our parents construct an altar to honor deceased friends and family members. This year they honored Maria Montessori. Building the altar takes months of preparation starting at the school with crepe paper flower making and ending in the town's central plaza with the actual construction. Everyone gets involved.

We added our first after-school program this fall. The community has been asking for an English language class for children as the public school does not offer it. We found an excellent teacher and started the class in September for 5-8 year olds. We hit our capacity of 12 children on the first day! It is exciting to see how fast children learn a 2nd language.
