GVAA'S PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Picture
Elizabeth Flanagan

Greetings to all GVAA artists on the day we spring forward!! I'm all for more daylight!
GVAA is springing forward with a new look to our newsletter and a new Newsletter Editor. I'm excited to introduce Odessa Delaina Burrow, an artist who comes with a wealth of experience in the administration of arts organizations. We are delighted to welcome her. She is also our featured artist in the NL this month so you can get to know her better.

A profound thank you to our outgoing Newsletter Editor, Dawn King. Dawn took over editorship two and a half years ago and developed and enhanced GVAA's Newsletter. She brought in new ideas and extensive professional experience which showed in our finished product. I received numerous compliments every month. Dawn, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your dedication to GVAA.

With fifty-four pieces to choose from at our April ingathering, our juror, Ray Hunter selected forty-two as well as admitting one of our four prospective members. Congratulations and welcome to our new member, Carol Spungen. Congratulations also to our Juror's Choice award winners: Judy Nienow, Warner Nienow, Rick Osgood, Frances Reighley, Robert Voorhees and Carol Zepke.

Also further on in the newsletter is a write-up by Yvonne Scolari on her team's experience in delivering an art lesson at El Camino School. Included are photos of some of the art produced by the kids. Congratulations and thank you to Yvonne, Jan Smith and Marilyn Clayton for such a successful lesson. The kids loved it so much they wanted them to come back every week.

Board Members Lynn Altschul and Karen Schroeder are continuing to develop the Art After School Program (ASAP) with Goleta Union School District (GUSD). If you are interested in joining them, please contact Lynn - [email protected] .

Our featured artist is, as I mentioned earlier, Odessa Delaina Burrow. Odessa was a member and President of the Alaska Artists Guild. She creates her beautiful art in many different media, including oil, watercolor and photography. We are happy she has joined us at GVAA and much
appreciate her taking on editorship of our Newsletter.

As always, please keep well and stay safe – Elizabeth

APRIL'S JUROR

In 1970 I moved to Santa Barbara to attend UCSB, where I was fortunate to study drawing with Howard Warshaw, a well-known muralist and figure painter.  Later, under his guidance I earned an MFA in drawing. Drawing, especially figure drawing, became my passion.

Some years later, I began teaching painting and drawing at Santa Barbara City College and towards the end of my teaching career at the Continuing Education Department known as Adult Ed.  I hadn’t planned on teaching but it turned out to be a good fit and ultimately lasted 36 years!

Picture
Douglas Property, Foggy Morning

During this time, I continued painting and drawing, attending workshops, classes and weekly figure drawing sessions.

About 10 years ago I discovered plein air landscape painting. Since that time, I’ve continued to go out weekly and paint on location with a few friends.  These small studies, done within a couple of hours, are like going to the gym for your painting skills!  The time spent in the field looking and reacting is invaluable. One learns to compose, mix color, create a sense of light, mood and place and ultimately trust your intuition.  Besides that, it’s just fun to be painting outside!

I think of myself as a naturalistic painter rather than a realistic one.  I’m free to interpret and change information if the painting needs it.  My goal is to make a well-crafted painting that speaks to the viewer about place, time of day, lighting and weather conditions.

The world is a beautiful place and landscape subjects worthy of painting can be found near or far.  I live across from Lake Los Carneros and paint there often. I hope my Santa Barbara paintings, the familiar trees, rocks, cliffs and seascapes, will enable people to appreciate the beauty that I see.

I enjoy combining travel and painting too!  It’s always nice to get out and paint something unfamiliar, to stretch your skills.  My husband and I have a four-wheel drive truck with a camper on it and we like to get out to unpopulated spaces-deserts, mountains, coastlines. The western states offer such variety.

Recently I returned from a three-week painting trip in Southwestern France, near the Pyrenees.  Every day our small group would go to a different tiny village and paint and explore. I came back with a group of paintings whose subject matter is very different from what I usually look for.  This was often frustrating, but I learned a lot and came home with the best souvenirs!

A Look at NO Signs

I have self-published a photography book entitled A Look at NO Signs. The book includes images of the ubiquitous NO signs posted with such frequency in and on the places we frequent in our lives.  I began capturing NO sign images in 2009, accumulating more than 200 images locally and during my travels.  The image on the cover is the first image I captured for this project.  These signs are truly everywhere.

FEATURED GVAA ARTIST

Odessa Delaina Burrow

A Sunset Walk, 24x48, oil on canvas - sold

I moved to Ojai, California in February 2022, after living in Alaska for 45 years. I was accepted into GVAA  November, 2023 and love the art community here. My quest as a volunteer was accepted to create the monthly newsletter. Dawn and Paula have been my valuable resources during this month of transition.  My passion is art.

I graduated from Alaska Pacific University with a masters degree in Information Technology (IT) and worked as a microcomputer specialist for 20 years. After retiring from the IT industry, I returned to college to complete my "Alaska Teachers' Certification" and continued working for another 10 years in Anchorage AK.

Lakota Chief, 12x18, Watercolor on Archers 300lb paper

Having always been a dedicated shutterbug, initially I used my photographs as a guiding tool to capture scenes of beauty, which I'd then transform into creative imagery using oils on canvas.  In the late 80s, I began to further hone my skills by devoting time to join in the circles of professional artists and art teachers, mastering classic styles and innovative techniques to accentuate my natural instincts as an artist.

As member and President of the Alaska Artists Guild, I helped promote, educate and support artists within the State of Alaska. I've also lived in Hawaii, on the big island, Oklahoma City, and Boston, Massachusetts.

Being raised in Alaska’s remote wilderness gave me a tremendous passion for nature's wilds. From my earliest years of living on the banks of a river in Willow, I have accumulated a lifetime of incredible experiences exploring the great North.

Ravens Roast, 18x24, oil on canvas - sold

After moving to Oklahoma during my teen years, my artistic interests blossomed as I observed my beloved grandmother, Odessa, paint vibrant murals upon the walls of her home. As a tribute to my namesake and to her profound inspiration, I sign my paintings in honor of her with my first name, Odessa, and middle initial, D.

For years oil paints have been my preferred medium, however I also love to use pastels, acrylic, Casein, cold wax or watercolors and find great pleasure in the unique flow of each medium.

California Aquaduct Land

Picture

As a child, every year I would come to spend time in Santa Barbara with my grandparents. On Saturdays my grandmother would pull up behind some house down a lane and we would visit and buy eggs, oranges, lemons, walnuts and vegetables. I carry with me treasured memories of all the beautiful agricultural land that was all around us.

After earning a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from California State University at Los Angeles, I moved to Santa Barbara. I have been an art educator my adult life, teaching and developing art curriculum for Santa Barbara City Schools K-8th grades.

For the past decade I have taught a class titled Conversations and Experiences in Art for “older adults” in the Santa Barbara City College Adult Ed programs.

El Camino After School Art Program

Color Wheel lesson with girl eating watermelon project

Our 4th, 5th and 6th grade students from El Camino school were very enthusiastic about their first After School Art Program watercolor project, Trees In Winter, especially the part where they laid down the blue painters tape to form the trees. Their finished results ranged from soft and pale to bold and beautiful.

The students had so much energy, swapping ideas and helping each other out. Once finished, Jan marshaled the students together to show their work, and she critiqued each piece to the delight of everyone.  We could see by their smiles just how much they enjoyed their afternoon art class.

For the second class we thought a lesson in color theory might be fun. The students filled in their individual color wheels using oil pastels and blending techniques. Once finished with the color wheels, as inspiration for their next project, Marilyn came up with a colorful, wild-looking portrait-cartoon of a girl taking a huge bite out of a piece of watermelon. The students created their own versions utilizing oil pastels and some of the blending techniques they’d learned earlier.
