Star Republican Women's Literacy Committee will host its second Red Shoe Book Club event this year on Tuesday, May 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Lantana Room at the Horseshoe Bay Resort Hotel.

Literacy Committee Chairman Carole White announced that the book to be reviewed will be "The Shroud Conspiracy." The thriller novel by John Heubusch is about the race between science and religion to discover the truth about Christianity’s most famous relic, the Shroud of Turin.

"The Red Shoe Book Club is a way for SRW members and associates to explore and discuss books," Carole said.  "We hope you will wear your red shoes and join us for a lively time of sharing thoughts and views about this suspenseful book."

Following the book review, SRW will host a C.H.A.T. --Chicks Having an Awesome Time.  The topic to start the chat will be: How SRW members and associates can be better legislative advocates.

In less than a month, the 85th Texas Legislature is scheduled to end its 140th day session on May 29.  So now is a critical time to let your elected Representative and Senator know how you want them to vote on issues of interest to you.

First, please consider expressing your support for five resolutions passed by the Texas Federation of Republican Women Board.  Click on the names listed below to download and view each resolution:

Second, make a list of the issues you think are high priority for you, your community and your state.  Then seek information about how these issues are being addressed by the 85th Legislature.

Area newspapers frequently have updates on key bills being considered by the Legislature to help you keep current on their status.  You can also use online tools to get copies of bills and current status of where they stand in the Legislature. (See Legislative Update article below to get tips on using these online tools.) And you can go to your elected Representative’s and Senator’s website to learn about their priorities and whether they are in concert with what they promised and/or if they support your position on issues.

Getting our candidates elected is just one part of being a good Republican.  We must stay informed and engaged as to how our elected officials are representing us.  We need to ensure that they know how we want them to vote and that we will hold them accountable to do so.  In addition, we need to thank them for their efforts in support of our issues, values and principles.

Legislative Update

By Tomi MacDonald

Chairman, Legislative Committee

Now is the time to let your voice be heard on legislation being considered by the 85th Texas Legislature!  Many bills are entering the final stages of debate prior to a final vote before the Legislature ends on May 29.

There are a number of ways you can advocate your position on issues that are important to you.  To learn more, go to  http://www.starrw.org/legislative-advocacy.html. You will find a power point presentation on how to become a legislative advocate and how to get a list of your representatives to contact.

You can go online and research legislation about your issues by going to the following website:  http://www.legis.state.tx.us/MnuMyTLO.aspx  Click on the “Search” button and select “text search.”  Simply enter any of the words that best describe your issue and click on a “Search” button to find bills that may be pending within the Senate or House.  You can get the text of the bills of interest to you and then track the bill through the legislative process. There is an “Alerts” option where you can enter the bill numbers you want to track and you will be notified of committee and calendar postings regarding those bills.

Following is an update on one issue that has gotten a lot of attention in the 85th Legislature.  Click on the bill number and see more info about it and how it is tracking through the Legislature as a way to learn the process of bill tracking.  I think you will find it both fun and enlightening.

Sanctuary Cities Legislation.

Last week, the Texas House passed SB 4Governor Greg Abbott’s emergency item to ban “sanctuary city” policies in Texas. It is now headed to a conference committee between House members and Senators.

Of course, the term "sanctuary city" has no legal definition, but essentially the bill requires cities and counties within the state to cooperate with ICE detainer requests (federal requests to detain suspected illegal immigrants for further investigation into their status).

For additional information about legislation or the current session, please feel free to contact Tomi MacDonald, SRW Chairman of the Legislation Committee:   [email protected] or 830-220-0230.
