What is the Great American Smokeout?

The Great American Smokeout began in 1970 in Randolph, Massachusetts when Arthur P. Mullaney "asked people to give up cigarettes for a day and donate the money they would have spent on cigarettes to a high school scholarship fund" (Retrieved from awarenessdays.com). Since then, there has been a dramatic change in tobacco prevention awareness, and laws banning smoking in work environments, restaurants and public parks. There has also been an increase of supporters from communities, health advocates and government to publicize the need to quit.
