Scene report On this special edition of "uMAHmi", ICYT's own on-going food column, our own writer-at-large @tyler.s.mah is joined by @raelandmendoza at last week's "For My Dawgs" pop up. What ensued was a cocktail induced evening of hot dogs, saucy debauchery, and ~*BIG VIBES*~. Read all about it on our recap, with Tyler up first. Tyler: Salutations from the newsletter for a recap Scene Report from the “For My Dawgs” pop up event at @restaurantyarrow . It was a packed house event for @oldirtybenson and @benmstaley – glizzy’s were being gobbled, Negroni’s and Miller High Life's were being guzzled. Big Boss Rae and I hit the spot with some of the homies, posting up on the Bar Yarrow side for the night. What more can I say? Vibes were cool, music was bumping and food was the best kind of “hands dripping messy”.Needless to say, I was flying close to the sun wearing my white 18East cotton ripstop double knee pants to such a sauce centric event. I personally downed two dogs fully loaded. Looking at the stacked menu of add-ons I decided to split them into two separate hot dogs. The first one I had was on the Meuwly's All Pork Weenie loaded with the works of ketchup, mustard, relish, Japanese mayo – plus the primo add-ons of crispy fried shallots, pepperoncini and house bacon. Let me tell you that shit slapped. All the toppings came together perfectly and complimented each other well with the salty fried shallots, briny and hot pepperoncini, and the chew of the house bacon. The second glizzy was the heavy hitter - with all the complimentary toppings on the All Pork Meuwly plus the added good stuff of queso cheese sauce and beef chili. This one was a blood bath of sauce and toppings in the best way possible. Having a bowl of crispy crinkly cut fries (with the secret seasoning blend = addictingly salty and little bit sweet) on it was the perfect vehicle to mop up the over spilled sauce and get the most bang for your buck. All in all that night was a MOOOOVIE. Looking forward to the next pop-up event hopefully coming sooner than later! - @tyler.s.mah Rae: Pleasantries aside, going into this night I could already feel the energy was going to be unhinged. This was probably the first big event of the summer I’ve gone to that we weren’t working with in any capacity, so as soon as Benson hit me with the sample pics earlier that week it was already decided that the tempo was set to full turbo. If you haven’t been, Yarrow is a pretty small spot. The shadowed dark green and grey interior is tastefully intimate, yet still coy and intriguing. However that night, the energy was as frenetic as the classic New York rap (an @olddirtybenson signature) playing in the background. I pull up alone early ahead of the crew, and find a singular empty chair at the already packed bar. Upon arrival, I give a few obligatory dap ups to familiar faces, order a Negroni and Miller High Life with the QUICKNESS, and let out an audible “YOOOO” as I discover I’m seated beside THEE local food photographer and homie @blue_tooth . On his advice, I also order a Meuwly’s dog with literally ALL of the fixings and fries. I kid you not, that shit was so sauce’d up I quite literally narc'd out and asked for a fork and knife as to not get Japanese mayo and/or beef chilli on the flowy black silk shirt, pearl necklace, and vintage gold chains ensemble I decided wear out that night. The proceeding 15-20 minutes were all a blurred fever dream, mainly comprised of fumbling around with hot dogs with my mouth in the dark. By the time I regained my bearings, our crew had commandeered the sole booth adjacent to the bar. From there, it was a revolving door of excitedly greeting friends as they entered the restaurant space. This energy seemed contagious, as it very noticeably ran throughout everyone in attendance. After so long apart, it was comforting to know that great food and drinks will always be a great reason bring people together. I also definitely got sauce on my shirt. PS: I guess I should’ve written more about the actual food. If you’d like a more gastronomic focused review, check out @blue_tooth’s write up. - @raelandmendoza |
