Winter 2019 Newsletter Letter from The President By: Lucinette Alvarado, CIH - President, Pittsburgh AIHA ¡Hola! I hope everyone had a great 2018 and is off to a good start for 2019! I am so happy that we are having a great term. We had great events like going underground to a mine and had a talk about beryllium. Thanks to everyone who helped on these events. We are just getting started! For those who haven’t being able to collaborate in some manner, I hope we gave you the motivation to step up and join us in this journey. We still have events to plan for the remaining of this term especially places to host the event. Stay tuned for announcements on these events to see if you will be able to lead or host it. There is a student chapter in the works and will let you know when is official. We need to support our students. They are the future of our profession! Don’t forget about the membership drive that Christy posted. There are different ways to renew the membership. Please feel free to encourage your colleagues in the EHS profession to join us. New members are always welcome. With the holidays just past - I hope you were able to celebrate with your beloved ones. Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year, Three Kings Day (Epiphany) and Chinese year; doesn’t matter which one you believe in, is all about being together as a family, accept and respect each other. I wish you the best as we begin a new year - keep in mind that safety is always first and looking forward to keep working with you in 2019. Learn how you can help.... Hello Everyone! At the Winter Business Meeting, we discussed opportunities for mentoring IH students and young professionals. We often receive queries from students at local colleges that are seeking mentors to fulfill course requirements or individuals interested in learning more about the IH field. We thought a good first step would be to gauge local section interest in participating in mentoring opportunities. Please contact us (email to
[email protected] ) if you'd like to be added onto our "Interested Mentors" list. Whenever a student reaches out, we will send their information to the smaller group and whoever feels best suited can offer up their guidance. If you have a better suggestion as to how we can get this program up and running, please speak up! The more effective the program is, the better an impact we can have on the development of our profession and of quality industrial hygienists. Thank you and Happy New Year!
