FALL IS COMING!

Oh The Times They Are Changing...

Dr. Robin Skrine - Breast Surgeon BarbaraCares Board Member

It is 2020 and a whole new world. Since March of this year we now look at the world through different lenses. We see social unrest, the significant loss of life and most importantly the effects of COVID-19. This has been troubling and difficult for all of us and we must find ways to cope and stay healthy. As we feel out of control, what can we do to gain control? I would say if first starts with taking control of ourselves and our lives. Focus on how we live and what we eat. 90% of the chronic diseases that we struggle with can be traced to poor diet, poor sleep and high stress. So what can you do about it? Regarding your health, follow recommended safety and health advice; know to maintain social distance, wash your hands frequently and wear a mask out in public. I'm going to add, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables-- fresh fruits and vegetables; 10 servings or more a day to ensure you get all the vitamins and nutrients needed to help bolster your immune system. Foods in the berry class: blueberries, strawberries and raspberries etc. have antioxidants which helps bolster your immune system and fight off disease. Stay away from processed foods and added sugars as they decrease the immune system. Stay away from foods that can worsen inflammation and lead to infection, including beef and dairy products. Avoid processed foods. When it comes to sleep it is essential to your health as well. Do what you can do to try to get at least six hours of sleep at night. More is better! Regarding stress, of course it is difficult to mitigate stress in our lives. The things that worry us are not going to go away but we need to find outlets for that stress. I would recommend take at least 30 minutes a day for “me time.” Go for a walk, read a book, take an exercise class or call a friend. Do what you need to take a little time to relax and unwind. Prayer and meditation are also never a bad thing! These stress relievers can lead to better sleep and also help you avoid stress eating. Most of all to take time for yourself and for your family and to take care of yourself. Take one day at a time and remember all that you can do is the best that you can do. At the end of the day take control of your life and your actions to help navigate through these uncertain times. God is with you. You got this!

Jeanine Andersen – BarbaraCares Board Member  & Triple Negative Breast Cancer Survivor

As a 8 year survivor I know how important it is to keep my immune system healthy.  However, when COVID-19 hit, it seemed so overwhelming on what to do and who to follow not only for myself but for my entire family.  It’s important to always wash your hands after coming in contact with high touch services.  Like your door handles, your sink handles, mailbox, and of course whenever you travel outside the home. I keep a small tote bag in my car that holds wet wipes, hand sanitizer, extra face masks, Kleenex, etc.  I’ve invested in all kinds of “cute” masks as a new accessory (I have two daughters ).  I purchased a mesh nylon bag to place masks in to wash after each use. I hang them to dry to make them last a little longer. It’s also important to eat immune boosting foods like organic fruits and vegetables that are free from pesticides.  Lean meats and fish are also important. I talked to my physician and asked what extra things I could be doing to stay healthy.  She noted to drink lots of water, get out and take a walk or ride my bike and continue to include B12, Vitamin D and C in my daily routine.  I also take time to pick up the phone to call a friend or family member to see how they are doing.  Zoom calls with old friends has been the new Friday evening Happy Hour which provides me with an extra boost of energy from all the laughter and story telling.  Online church and prayer keeps me grounded and ready for a new week.

Mammograms Matter!

October is a significant month for those that have been diagnosed, seen others diagnosed and for those that have lost someone diagnosed with breast cancer. This month is set aside for purposeful awareness of a disease that will affect 1 in 8 women in their lifetime. This is not the month to sit out but rather rally everyone within your sphere of influence to set an appointment, get screened and encourage others to do the same! Mammograms Matter! Early detection saves lives! This October, make the  commitment for you and your family to get screened because your health cannot wait. Will you make the commitment this October? We are counting on you to do your part to stop late-stage diagnosis and increasing mortality rates associated with breast cancer here in Texas.
