KNOWING WHERE YOUR FOOD COMES FROM

If you have visited our store you know that one of our main values is knowing from whom and where we source all of our products. We pride ourselves on being responsible consumers, and making sure that we source items that are not only best for the local economy, but also for our customers' and the planet's health and well-being. Below you will find an overview of our produce, meat and egg suppliers, but you can always find more information and details on our website. My challenge to you this week is to look into the companies that you purchase from. Who makes your shampoo and household cleaners? What are their values? What are the ingredients and where are they sourced?

Every little decision and purchase makes a difference.

HAPPY DIRT | DURHAM, NC

As you have seen when you come in our store, we try to source our produce as locally as possible. This is not only great for the local farmers and economy, but also ensures that you are getting the freshest produce with the highest nutrient content possible. We get a lot of our produce from the Bradfords here on the farm, and we also source directly from Street Fare Farm, Mike "The Fit Farmer" Dickson, and Green Thumb Gardens (all located in Concord, NC). What you may not know is that we also work with a local distributor, Happy Dirt. This great team sources amazing produce and other products from family farms/businesses here in NC, but also in the region and across the country. This allows us to carry a variety of seasonal produce throughout the year that we otherwise would not have access to.

You can learn more about this great company and their team here

FIRSTHAND FOODS | DURHAM, NC

We source our pork and beef from Firsthand Foods. Their wonderful team diligently seeks out small, family owned North Carolina farmers that raise their livestock on pasture and use best practices in humane treatment and all-natural breeding. Each of the meat processors they use are also humane certified. Without Firsthand Foods we would not have access to so many wonderful farmers and their families who are doing their best to supply quality meats to the local community.

You can read more about each of the families whose beef and pork we carry here: beef | pork.

MIKE DICKSON - "THE FIT FARMER" | CONCORD, NC

We carry a variety of pasture raised chicken cuts from Jacob Pless (8th Generation Farm), Jessica Evans (Evans Family Farm), and Mike "The Fit Farmer" Dickson (Concord, NC) where the animals are 100% humanely and naturally raised and harvested. Evans Family Farm and Mike Dickson also supply our pasture-raised chicken and duck eggs. We also like to support other local families that have all natural eggs to sell, and you will often see a variety of them here in our store.

Fact of the Week: We do our best to keep retail costs down, specifically on our meat and egg products, even if that means less of a profit for ourselves. We want everyone to be able to have access to responsibly raised and humanely harvested local meat, eggs, and dairy. Firsthand Foods recently shared an article that reveals some of the reasons why food costs are so high and continue to rise. You can access the full article here.
