During the month of October, our ITAT students were very fortunate to learn about and participate in a traditional sacred cultural practice- the 'Ava ceremony. Our knowledgeable advisor, Auro Sosi briefed the students on the duties and expectations during each ceremony. "
We teach about the protocols and what to expect during such a sacred ritual. We also teach of who is involved and what each of their responsibilities and duties are. And then we come back a couple of days later, ask the students to dress up traditionally and we hold our very own Ava Ceremony at their schools.
"In all of the ceremonies we have held we have had a number of school administrators, faculty and staff attend to watch and participate and they all have been such spiritual and a unique experience for us all. We are grateful that we are able to educate not just our students, but everyone on what kava was originally and should truly be used for instead of what it is known for today, but doing it in such a reverent manner has made all the difference and more meaningful for our students" -Auro Sosi, West Jordan ITAT advisor and People of the Pacific Instructor
Our ITAT youth graciously and proudly shared their traditional culture and spirit with their peers and administrators, and as always they find ways to educate their community members on the importance of being tobacco and vape free in all of this.
ITAT students were also working hard in practicing their emotional intelligence skills, participating in workshops on emotional communication and emotional vulnerability. These skills are invaluable as they practice being peer advocates and sources of mental health resources for their peers.
