USED BOOKFAIR IS ALMOST HERE

The third grade classes at Ormondale are happily sponsoring a Used Book Fair to help a needy charity. We would like the community to use one of the 4 “r”s of waste management, reuse, in order to help the charity and save our environment as well.

Beginning the first week in January and continuing through February 28th, you will be able to drop off your books, CDs, DVDs. There will be kids out front collecting your kind donations in the morning drop off line at Ormondale. For Corte Madera families, there will be a collection box in the library.

We will be accepting:

All children’s books

All tween books

CD’s

DVD’s

Vinyl Albums

Adult Categories:  Cookbooks, coffee table books, travel books, self help books

We hope that the entire community can join us as we celebrate reusing and sharing, from March 2nd to March 6th in the Ormondale MUR.

foundation news

Your foundation dollars at work:  serenity garden

While the 2nd grade garden at Ormondale has been an integral part of the curriculum for years and a memorable part of our children’s time there, the garden at Corte Madera has had its ups and downs. With a grant from the Portola Valley Schools Foundation and many helpful hands during last month’s PTO campus cleanup day, Brook Coffee of Coffee Grounds Edible Gardens is bringing CMS’s garden back to life, both literally and figuratively speaking.

Using PVSF funding, Coffee created a lunchtime garden club that meets twice weekly for students who want to learn about cultivating seeds, weeding and watering, using compost to nourish soil, and mulching to keep it moist. The kids will hang bird boxes, create an environment where important pollinating species can thrive, and take part in citizen science projects like the Great Sunflower Project.

“The garden provides a calming space for students who like to be outside but not surrounded by the noise and physical play that we see on the yard,” Kristen Shima wrote in the grant application. “Many students need a quiet place to relax and have down time during the school day.”

Or as 5th grade student Jack Day told Coffee the other day, “I’m so glad the garden is open because I get really tired of playing tag.”
